| Descripción : | The present study explores the impact of Teletandem on the reduction of linguistic insecurity and the improvement of speaking skills among students of the B.A. in Social Work at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. While English is the most widely spoken language in the world, many learners find speaking to be the most challenging skill, often experiencing a high affective filter and linguistic insecurity when engaging in real-time communication. This research proposes that Teletandem, as a virtual, autonomous, and collaborative environment, can provide learners with the necessary practice to develop their language skills through direct interaction and feedback from a partner who is a native speaker of the target language. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving four female participants with a B1 proficiency level. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the triggers of linguistic insecurity. The findings revealed that students experience linguistic insecurity primarily due to a fear of mispronunciation, instances of miscommunication, and a perceived lack of knowledge concerning the topics of discussion. However, the results suggest that through this learning mode, learners improve their oral proficiency --- specifically vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. The study concludes that Teletandem offers a strategic complement to formal instruction, allowing learners to take responsibility for their own learning and improve their language skills in an authentic communicative setting. |
